Tower Grove Interlocking
St. Louis, Missouri

Tower Grove Interlocking was designed and planned by the Missouri Pacific and the St. Louis and San Francisco Railroad in 1903; it wasn’t till 1940 that the interlocking was placed in service. The tower was a small one story brick building; it housed a Union Switch and Signal type "UR" interlocking Machine. "UR" stood for Union Route; it was an all electric relay interlocking. The Union Route machine was a panel with a etched track diagram, there were entrance buttons and exit buttons by the home signals on the diagram. These were used to select the route you wished to clear. Around 1970 the Missouri Pacific Oak Hill Line was single tracked through the interlocking. In the early 1990's the interlocking was closed when the oak Hill line was arranged to connect to the now BN line. This eliminated the diamonds and a need for the interlocking. Missouri Pacific trains would now run on the BN line east until they got to Grand Avenue interlocking where they went back to their own trackage.
