CSX Illinois Sub gets a Signal Upgrade

The CSX Illinois Sub starts in East St. Louis and passes through Caseyville, O'Fallon, Breeze, and Odin. The line is signaled in Color Position Lights or CPLS, some end of sidings have dwarf CPLs. In the fall of 2005 CSX started to install new signal bases next to the high mast CPLs in O'Fallon and placed new bases between the intermediate signals at Caseyville. Between Caseyville and O'Fallon, there are three sets of intermediate signals. It looks like CSX is going to take two sets of signals and replace them with one set of new Safetran CLS-20R Signals. The third set in Fairview Heights where setup in the early summer of 2006. CSX is only replacing the signals up to Smiley Street in O'Fallon Illinois. The siding in O'Fallon is known as Carbon and contains four high mast CPLs and two dwarf CPLs. In early winter of 2005 CSX installed new four aspect Safetran CLS-10D signals next to the dwarf CPLs. All the new Safetran signals have been covered up by tarps. Since the summer of 2006 all the new Safetran signals have been installed and tarped since. The only new signals that have been set into service are the Safetran CLS-10D that was replacing the West end dwarf CPL at Carbon. The dwarf CPL was stolen in the summer of 2006.

According to several CSX Signal Supervisors, the signals were to be cut over in October of 2006. In November of 2006 the Regional Signal Supervisor said that the project was delayed till the first of the year. The reason being that the new crossing system was not completed as planned. I met with the Regional Signal Supervisor on Jan 18 2007 about ZCG Utility Scrap getting the contract to remove all the old signal cabinets and signals. He said that the date for removal is the end of March 2007. We got a tour of the CSX staging area and it contained nothing but Safetran CLS-10D signals for the dwarfs and pallets of new Safetran CLS-20R signals. [See Right Picture]

This was the other end of the Carbon siding. The dwarf CPL was stolen one night so the CSX just cut over the new signal. This is a four aspect Safetran CLS-10D.
